Workplace Harassment Examples

Californians who are working in any kind of job can face employment law violations. Often, unfortunately, people who are working entry-level jobs are the most vulnerable. Violations of California labor law might occur and oftentimes, the victim is unaware. That's why it's important to read anecdotal stories of alleged violations of labor and employment law to educate oneself.

One such story is about a woman who worked as a janitor for a real estate firm. The woman alleged she was sexually harassed and then dismissed from her job when she rejected the supervisor's advances. The woman had worked for the company for more than a decade before she was fired. As a result, the woman filed a lawsuit. According to the woman, the supervisor allegedly told her that he had fantasies about her and wanted to have a sexual relationship with her. The woman also alleges that the supervisor touched her inappropriately. When she resisted his advances, the woman alleged the supervisor became angry and would treat her harshly on the job.

In her complaint, the woman alleges that other women employed at the company were harassed by this supervisor. She complained to a female supervisor, but was allegedly told to ignore the behavior. A criminal complaint had been filed by this woman and two other employees asserting that the supervisor had committed sexual battery against them. The supervisor also allegedly texted a threat to the woman's sister. The woman was thereafter terminated.

Employees have the right to reject unwanted advances and not be in fear of losing their jobs. When these types of activities happen, employees have a right to consult with an attorney to determine whether the activity gives rise to a legal violation.
