January 2018 Newsletter

HAPPY NEW YEAR! And happy, it is. If you read JLG's November 2017 newsletter, you know that I was in trial in October and the trial extended through December 2017. I am HAPPY to report that WE WON! It was a hard-fought battle with its ups and downs, so the victory was especially gratifying. The victory was also sweet because I got to share it with my colleague of 13 years and husband of 4 years: David Zelenski. He second-chaired the trial with me and excelled in his areas of expertise, i.e. legal research and writing. With his help, we were able to exclude improper evidence, which led the Court to have no choice but to decide in our clients' favor. Together, we made a great team. And, the JLG Team is here to help you. If your new year's resolution is to get your legal affairs in order, whatever they may be, feel free to give us a ring.

New Parental Leave Act

As of January 1, 2018, the California Family Rights Act ("CFRA") was amended under Government Code section 12945.6, increasing protections for employees under the "New Parental Leave Act."

Previously, the CFRA provided that companies with at least 50 employees in a 75-mile radius were required to provide eligible employees with at least 12 weeks of unpaid child bonding leave, upon request, within one year of the child’s birth, adoption, or foster placement.

The new law is expanded to cover smaller-sized businesses, specifically, those with at least 20 employees in a 75-mile radius.
